Visiting SGH

Events June 17th, 2007

June 20, 2007
10:00 amto12:00 pm

I am scheduled to visit SGH for my 2-monthly checkup. My therapist was afraid that the scar cells was starting to spread 2 visits ago, but the last visit confirmed that it was just false alarm. It seems like I am going to be on therapy for a long time. :(

Cool weather

Reminisces June 17th, 2007

The weather’s been pretty cool these few days, which pretty much reminds me of the time when I was in SF. Actually it was supposed to be summer in SF, but the temperature was around 18 deg C. It was the kind of weather that you can just take a stroll without having to put on more than just a sweather or a wind breaker.

However, in sunny island Singapore, that’s the kind of temperature that we won’t get. The lowest that we’ve gotten is probably about 21 deg C and that it’s already giving a very nice, cool weather. ;) Today’s just like one of those days, except that it’s probably not as low as 21 deg C. My dad, who’s decided that he will get dinner for the family, described the weather outside as being cold, but I guess he meant that it was cooler than usual.

Speaking of which, I was just looking out of the lab windows the other day and noticed some unearthed soil with a bald tree on it. It looks like autumn in London or New York at Central Park and this stopped me in my steps, bringing me back in time for a short while. How I really miss those days. :)

Does anyone know where else can I get to sit down and enjoy a good breeze besides the ECP?

Blogging about work

General June 17th, 2007

There has been a recent brouhaha regarding the dismiss of a relief teacher, who had been dismissed for unknown reasons. I wanted to blog about this earlier, but thought that I should wait until it becomes clear on why he was dismissed.

Apparently, there is no further progress.

So, here’s my own take about blogging about work. Short of writing on superficial stuffs, I don’t really think it is advisable to blog about work, and this includes blogging under the “privacy of protected categories” because in the Internet, nothing is really protected. :(

So, here’s what an entry should not contain:

8:30am: Reach lab

8:31am: Key in password at door: 99405993

8:32am: Log into windows domain: staff\scientist, ty60q00tg

8:33am: Check email

8:34am: Reply to my supervisor Dr Tihs Folluf and told him that using cell line E95 is not a good thing

8:45am: Enter wet lab WL05 and used cell line E90 for Aikon experiment (restricted)

8:50am: Added Drac D.S. to E90

8:51am: Centrifuge

9:00am: Performed cytotoxicity tests

9:10am: Target reacting

9:15am: Good results!

Before you get up the next morning after blogging, your work will probably be repeated by rivals (colleagues or fellow workers) and the next thing you know, they will claim your works! Moreover, I don’t think it’s nice to let people know that you don’t get along with Dr. Tihs Folluf. :P So how would I have blogged?

8:30am: Reach lab (Ed: only if you have a habit or reaching work early or on time)

9:15am: Good results!

2:00pm: Start patent filing

5:00pm: Celebration!

Yup… leave out the details. In fact, the 2:00pm might already be a giveaway on where you are working and what you do., unless, of course, your supervisor doesn’t really mind about you blogging. For me, because of the confidentiality of what I do, I’d rather just stay clear of mentioning anything to do with work, be it as a student or as an intern. You’ll never know when you will be called up for “disciplinary actions”.

Ed: Just as I have finished condemning comment on blogging about work, Geek Goddess has her own opinions on how blogging can help you get your dream job. :)

Got so much work but…

Reminisces June 17th, 2007

… I think I am just going to relax a little on a lazy Saturday Sunday, and I think I am loosing track of time. Apparently, I kept thinking that today’s any other day except Sunday. Perhaps I am just working a little too hard on my projects. :P

Weekends used to be filled with fun and relaxation (except when I was rushing for assignments). I’d go down to ECP with a few friends for cycling, roller blading or simply catch the sea breeze. Either that or we’ll catch a movie somewhere or just picnic out somewhere along ECP or Esplanade. It was fun and relaxing, and I’m sorely missing those days.

Nowadays, weekends are either filled with work, or simply just catching up with sleep. Come to think of it, I better start working soon. :(

Happy Papa’s Day!

General June 17th, 2007

Happy Papa’s Day to all the father readers out there! Hehe… especially to my friends who have just fathered new borns. :) Today’s a day when everyone start going out for lunches and dinners as if it was given out free :P but it’s probably not as crowded as mother’s day :) How do I know that? I am a mother We tried getting a table at Crystal Jade during mother’s day and the queue at Bugis Junction seems as if it started from the gates of the Bugis MRT station!

However, I feel that our display of love for our papa and mama should not be restricted to just their respective days. Well, I do agree that these days are special days, but I think we should really treat our pama as if it were pama’s day everyday - and this does not mean that we should “celebrate” every day, but rather to appreciate their love for us and the fact that we are here because of them.

For me, I intend to do the dinner buying tonight because… I can’t really cook and I don’t the A&E load to increase by another 2 or 3 today. :P

Wed, wed!

General June 17th, 2007

Got up really early this morning because I am one of the sisters for my good friend’s wedding. On my way there, I was tasked with getting stuffs for the door game - lemon and lime, condensed milk, bitter gourd and chilli padi. Hehe… it was meant to represent sour, sweet, bitter and hot, or in chinese, suan1 tian2 ku3 la4.

Reached the bride’s place at about 7:45am and got the jiemei team to start squeezing the lemon and lime and slicing the bitter gourds and chilli padis. Meanwhile, the rest of the other relatives helped to keep a lookout for the groom’s arrival. The chilli padi was particularly hard to slice because I am tearing away as I was cutting them. How I pity the guys. :P

At about 8:45am, the groom arrived and were locked outside the door, negotiating with our chief negotiator to get into the house. The sisters team tried to get the brotherhood team to do stuffs to declare his undying love for the bride, but they were so unsporting! In the end, the bride’s mother was more worried that they would miss the auspicious hour and the brotherhood team got away with just eating the suan1 tian2 ku3 la4. Hmmph!

From there, everything moved like clockwork:

9:30am - left for groom’s house

11:00am - tea ceremony for groom’s family starts

11:30am - lunch starts

12:15pm - left for new couple’s home

12:45pm - left for bride’s home

1:15pm - tea ceremony for bride’s family starts. Apparently the elder, married couples give ang baos while the younger unmarried ones got ang baos from the couple.

1:45pm - lunch part 2 starts

2:30pm - home sweet home for me

It was really a long and tiring day, but an eye opener for me, especially the part where the brotherhood team is subjected to the sister team’s whims and fancies! Haha… I’ve got another one next month, but I am just a volunteer… so there might not be so much fun. Perhaps I will post more details later. Tired… zzz… :(
