All I want for Christmas… is a pair of Jay Chou Concert tickets (which costs $2400 in the black market)

Personal December 7th, 2007

I didn’t know about the concert until the middle of November, by then, all tickets were sold out! Can you believe it? All sold out!!! Goodness.

Anyway, I was just looking around and saw that there are people still getting their tickets! Apparently, there is some sort of waiting list from Sistic and more people have gotten their tickets. Well, I’ve nothing to say if they are die hard fans of Jay…. but! Look at this!

The tickets are going for $2400 for their buy now price for 2, which is $1200 for 1 ticket! Goodness! Is 1 ticket (originally $198) really worth 6 times its original price?! And that’s not all…

There is apparently a wait list! Haha… oh dear, I never knew that there was a wait list! =S Oh well, I guess it’s a free market after all. She can name any price she wants, but if there are people who are willing to pay that kind of price, well, all I can do is to congratulate her.

It does seem that she was some what interested to go for the concert, but somehow, I can’t help but feel that she was trying to profiteer from it.

Hmm… I am too shocked for words… don’t know what else to say.

Prima Deli incident: More Salmonella carriers found!

Singapore December 7th, 2007

More Prima Deli workers have been found to be carriers of the salmonella bacteria, which causes typhoid fever and diarrhoea amongst many other things. This got 109 people then who were poisoned by the tainted cakes, which was later increased to 143.

There are many species within Salmonella and it has nothing to do with salmon or Ella from S.H.E. According to Wikipedia:

Most cases of salmonellosis are caused by food infected with S. enterica, which often infects cattle and poultry, though also other animals such as domestic cats and hamsters have also been shown to be sources of infection to humans. However, investigations of vacuum cleaner bags have shown that households can act as a reservoir of the bacterium; this is more likely if the household has contact with an infection source, for example through members working with cattle or in a veterinary clinic.

Raw chicken and goose eggs can harbor salmonella enterica, initially in the whites of the eggs, although most eggs are not infected. As the egg ages at room temperature, the yolk membrane begins to break down and salmonella enterica can spread into the yolk. Refrigeration and freezing do not kill all the bacteria, but substantially slow or halt their growth. Pasteurizing (briefly heating to a specific temperature) and irradiation are used to kill salmonella for commercially produced foodstuffs containing raw eggs such as ice cream. Foods prepared in the home from raw eggs such as mayonnaises, cakes and cookies can spread salmonella if not properly cooked before consumption.

So the only question left is… how did they become carriers? Is this just the edge of the iceberg? No, I am not trying to create a scare, but seriously, this should be the bigger question that the authorities should ask.

MORE workers involved in making and selling the Prima Deli chocolate cakes which caused the mass food poisoning episode here have tested positive for salmonella.

More tainted ingredients have been uncovered.

And more food poisoning cases have come to light.

As of Thursday, there were 143 food poisoning victims - up from the earlier figure of 109 - including 11 who were hospitalised.

One young patient is still warded.

The Straits Times understands that this was a child who was discharged but readmitted when her symptoms returned.

Investigations by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority and Ministry of Health revealed on Thursday that another four workers from the Prima Deli factory have been found carrying the bug. This brings the total to six affected workers in the Keppel Road factory.

A food handler at one of the 39 bakery franchises has also tested positive for salmonella enteritidis.

Apart from the seven affected workers, another ingredient has been found tainted with the diarrhoea-inducing bacteria.

Chocolate cream was the second contaminated ingredient found, after hazelnut paste was discovered to contain it on Wednesday.

Investigations are still ongoing to identify the source of the outbreak, said the AVA and Health Ministry in a statement on Thursday night.

The authorities reiterated that people should throw away anything they had bought from Prima Deli, and should get immediate medical attention if they showed signs of food poisoning.

Live blogging from calling UOB Customer Service

Personal December 7th, 2007

I saw some charge on my statement which I wasn’t very clear about, so I decided to call the UOB Customer Service - which by now is infamous for their 25 minute wait - anytime of the day.

I wonder who calls them at 4:00am in the morning, not that I do. Anyway, I guess I didn’t have much of a choice. It’s about 1:20am, it should be alright.

1:25am Takes a deep breath and punch numbers… 1800-2222-121. *ring ring* Welcome to UOB Call Centre. For English, press 1, for Chinese, press 2. (Ed: If I can’t understand English, how do I know I have to press 2 for Chinese? Haha… Then again, the Chinese version came shortly) Pressed 1, then 0, then 1 again for banking services… The wait begins…

1:26am Oh boy… I think I am going to hate this… then someone answered the call. Good morning UOB, this is XXX speaking. How may I assist you? Wow! This is fast service! So it’s not as bad as I thought. After getting my accounts cleared, I asked about my cards. Ah… so here’s where the wait begins.

1:28am Still waiting… waiting… why are they not picking up the phone?

1:30am Yawning. Still listening to the music. Ok. Decided to put the phone on speaker mode.

1:31am Eh! 1 minute le. Still not picking up the phone? Who calls at 1:30am?

1:32am I decided to save whatever remaining minutes I have on my mobile plan and hung up. I think I’ll just call them tomorrow morning. Early morning. Damn. Going to waste 1/2 hour of time tomorrow. Shucks!

M1 Broadband is now unlimited!

Singapore December 7th, 2007

I’m not sure how late my news is, but apparently, M1 broadband has now gone unlimited! That means people can now download all they want, watch youtube all they want, and make as many Skype calls as they want! =)

While this may be good news to most, there is only one thing that I am worried of - reliability. With everyone not caring about how much they can download, everyone will just download at will and this may result in congestion!

This was what I had been getting for the past few weeks - download speeds of 12kbps. Yes, that’s quite pathetic and I had to wait till the cows came home before my gmail starts appearing.

Anyway, as Ridz and Mich were mentioning - it’s only a matter of time that M1 will jump into the unlimited data bundle bandwagon, and the reason they won’t is to provide a service level agreement of a certain download speed. Now that M1 did join in the rat race, it’s likely that the quality of surfing will be affected.

What luck. Wireless@SG is unreliable and now, the other alternative is going to be flooded soon. =(

More information can be found here. Thanks to reader JC for letting me know. ;)
